Bar stools are the easiest way to turn a kitchen island or high counter into a comfortable spot for breakfast, coffee and conversation. What height do you need?
A simple rule: leave 25–30 cm between the seat and the worktop so there is room for your legs.
- Kitchen island or counter 90–95 cm – choose counter stools with a seat height of 60–69 cm.
- Bar counter 105–110 cm – you need high bar stools with a seat of around 75 cm.
- Not sure of the exact height, or the stools will be used by people of different heights – adjustable bar stools with a gas lift change height in seconds.
What else to consider
- Footrest – without one, sitting on a tall stool for long is uncomfortable.
- Backrest – if you eat or work at the island, a stool with a back is more comfortable than a backless one.
- Upholstery – velvet looks cosy and elegant, while faux leather is the easiest to wipe clean.
- Width – allow roughly 55–60 cm per stool so no one feels cramped.
